Head out with an Adventure Coach on a daily outing to a nearby trail or let them take you on a private excursion. Join the team on one of our monthly beach clean-ups. Schedule a fat tire bike ride, yoga class, guided hike, Dory boat trip or clamming outing to a nearby pristine bay. Not sure how to fit it all in?   1. Headlands Agate Expedition

    AGATE EXPEDITION

    The storms along the North Coast create ideal conditions for agate hunting by uncovering colorful gemstones. Join our Adventure Coach and head out on a private guided agate hunt to a nearby beach. No special equipment necessary—all you need is a fun spirit and warm water-resistant clothing. Lucky prospectors may find agates such as red carnelian, moonstone, and red, green, and yellow jasper.

    TWO-HOUR GUIDED HIKE

    Join your Adventure Coach for a leisurely guided stroll on a nearby coastal trail.

    Two Rivers Trail at Nestucca Bay Wildlife Refuge – Follow a 2.2-mile trail that winds through almost 200 acres of federally protected wildlife habitat. Wander through coastal prairie, mixed-alder forest, and wildflower meadows, stopping along the way to view the confluence of the Nestucca and Little Nestucca Rivers.

    Sitka Sedge Natural Area– Explore 3.5 miles of looping trails across one of Oregon’s last intact estuaries, home to the endangered snowy plovers. You’ll see tidal flats, saltwater marshes, forested wetlands, abundant marsh wildlife, beach views and the beautiful native grass-like plants that this beautiful spot is named after.

    Bay Trail to River Trail Loop at Bob Straub State Park – Explore this 4-mile equestrian trail on the Nestucca sand spit through a forest of juvenile spruce and shore pines, grassy dunes, scotch broom, and huckleberry. This looped trail will weave along a low-lying marsh environment, providing river views and birding opportunities.

    FOUR-HOUR GUIDED HIKE

    Join your Adventure Coach for an epic North Coast hike. Choose from:

    Cape Trail – This challenging 4.7-mile trail meanders through a coastal old-growth forest with sweeping views of the seascape. At the tip of the cape, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning view before the return home.

    South Trail – The less-traveled and moderate 3.6-mile trail descends through a forest of Sitka spruce, ferns, and salmon berries. At the base of the cape, the trail opens up to a secluded beach.

    God’s Thumb – The 4.8-mile trail meanders through Siuslaw National Forest, featuring beautiful wildflower meadows and stunning panoramic views. Southward, view the seven miles of beaches that make up Lincoln City and to the north, view hidden coves, offshore sea stacks, the Salmon River mouth, and Cascade Head.

    NETARTS PADDLE

    The relatively small and shallow Netarts Bay, which means “near the water” in the language of the local Tillamook, provides spectacular and unique opportunities to enjoy nature and wildlife closeup. Nestled between Cape Meares and Cape Lookout, the bay is the ideal spot to kayak along the shoreline to view crabs, seals, sea lions and our many coastal water birds.

  5. Kayak Crabbing

    NETARTS KAYAK CRABBING

    Netarts Bay is home to the succulent Dungeness crab. Head out with an Adventure Coach on one of our 12-foot sit-on-top fishing kayaks loaded with two crab rings ready to drop in the pristine waters of this beautiful bay. As you wait for the crab to find the bait, enjoy a relaxing and fun paddle in search of seals, shorebirds, starfish, and more. When you return to Headlands, settle in and enjoy a crab boil with your catch. Enjoy a glass of beer, wine, or zero proof libation and charcuterie plate. If crabbing conditions aren’t favorable, we’ll enjoy a crab dish prepared by the Meridian culinary team.

  6. Netarts Bay Clamming

    CLAMMING AT NETARTS BAY

    Nothing is more iconic of the Oregon Coast than a clamming trip – a bit of sand, salt, mud, and a great time spent with good friends. Head out at low tide with an Adventure Coach to one of our favorite spots for clamming along the pristine waters of Netarts Bay. Heron and other shore birds abound along this beautiful bay where we will rake for steamer clams, then return to the lodge for an afternoon clam bake with freshly baked bread and your choice of a beer, wine, or zero-proof refreshment.

  7. Guided kayak adventure

    LITTLE NESTUCCA RIVER PADDLE

    Experience a scenic bird watching paddle from the Little Nestucca River to the Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge. This area offers a wintering habitat for geese and serves as a vital rest stop for migrating shorebirds. Opportunities to see Aleutian Cackling Geese in their only wintering spot in the world & the inspiration behind our Headlands logo, local waterfowl, and bald eagles.

    NESTUCCA RIVER EXCURSION

    Join your adventure coach on a scenic 7-mile paddle down the Nestucca River. You’ll launch from Cloverdale and follow the river downstream to Pacific City, along the way there will be plenty of opportunities for bird and wildlife viewing—keep an eye out for bald eagles, harbor seals and salmon while you paddle. This outing offers an ideal way to explore the lesser-seen side of our surroundings while providing ample time to learn about the history of our region.

    TIDE POOL EXPLORATION

    Join an Adventure Coach enthusiast for a private and in-depth tour of our beloved tide pools at the base of Cape Kiwanda. Meet scores of sea stars, tiny tunicates, and prehistoric sculpins while learning the geological history of how the pools were created, exactly how the moon influences tidal rhythms, and how the secretive and captivating inhabitants of the intertidal zone are used as an indicator of the health of our oceans.

    SUNSET BONFIRE ON THE BEACH

    Head to the beach for a North Coast tradition, Headlands–style. Our Adventure Coaches will build a bonfire for you and set you up with chairs, s’mores makings for two from our friends at 1927 S’mores Company, and a bottle of Oregon pinot noir. The handsome Pendleton Motor Robe you wrap yourself up in is yours to keep for your next adventure. At the end of the evening, our team will return to clean up and extinguish the fire.

  11. Mushroom foraging near Headlands Coastal Lodge and Spa

    MUSHROOM FORAGING – COMING THIS FALL

    In the fall, our surroundings are ripe with the fruit of fungi! Join your Adventure Coach for a fun and informative guided excursion at Camp Meriwether, a 720-acre Boy Scout summer camp. Founded in 1926, this large piece of property sits below the cliffs of Cape Lookout and is a prime location for fall foraging. Learn how to safely identify a harmful mushroom from a tasty delight, while understanding where each mushroom likes to grow. Return to the Lodge for an afternoon mushroom bake with freshly baked bread and your choice of a beer, wine, or zero-proof refreshment. If foraging conditions aren’t favorable, we’ll enjoy local mushrooms provided by the Meridian team.

    Join your Adventure Coach on this beautiful hike that heads out from our lobby and through town to a “secret” trailhead. The trail ascends gently up Nestucca Ridge and offers unique views of Pacific City and its coastline before sloping down through a quiet stand of pines. Leashed dogs are welcome.

    Join your adventure coach for a hike up the tallest dune on the Oregon Coast. On a clear day the top of the dune offers views of Nestucca Bay to the south and Cape Lookout to the north—with expansive views along the way. Leashed dogs are welcome.

    BEACH CLEANUP

    Here at Headlands, we take stewardship of our natural areas seriously. Beach cleanups can reduce litter, protect our ocean, and raise awareness about litter and plastic pollution. Before you head out on your beach stroll, pick up a Barrel Bag from the Adventure Center. We offer a pint from Pelican Brewing for every Barrel Bag returned with collected trash. Help us keep our beaches healthy, protect marine life, and maintain the beauty of our coastline.
